Sweet Charlie



A different post from usual this week and a sad one too.
This is Charlie, my lovely 17 year old cat who had to be put to sleep on Monday. He became ill at the end of last week, and after several days of not eating and hiding himself away then struggling to walk I knew that this trip to the vet would be his last.
The vet could tell straight away from his eyes and ears that he was jaundiced and probably had a growth on his liver. There was nothing the vet could do to help so Charlie was sedated and gently put to sleep. And I've cried a lot for him.
Anyone reading this who doesn't have pets probably thinks that's a bit silly, those of you who do have pets will understand I'm sure.

He was the sweetest natured cat I've ever come across, born feral but very affectionate, miaowed when he wanted brushing {he loved being brushed} and had a bit of a rubber and bleach fetish. He also liked to chew any houseplant that vaguely resembled grass. The plant in the kitchen still bears his teethmarks.

He was loved and cared for and will be missed. Thank you for sharing your life with me Charlie ♥

    I'm so sorry to hear about your loss! We lost our little kitten quite sudden this sunday night so I know that feeling all too well... :( It always hurt so much, sometimes it takes a little time to take in but there's always pain, and no matter if they are young or old it always happen too soon. They will at least live on in our hearts, in our memories. The hurting inside subsides and instead the fond memories take its place. Charlie got a long life full of love and joy and that's a memory of him that I hope, with time, will help ease the pain of the loss. He looks so sweet and beautiful in those pics.

    I am a reader of your blog, but very rarely comment. Today, I must leave you a comment of encouragement. I too have a Charley born feral that I captured one December when he was about 4 months old approximately 8 years ago. Also, a gray tabby with the big "M" on the forehead. I also have hislittle brother born a year later. I understand your loss and know the sadness of losing a beloved pet too many times. Your Charlie was fortunate and one of the lucky ones to have been found and adopted you. Remember, there are more waiting in line who need a chance to provide you with comfort during your loss.

    I have a cat who is the love of my life so I do understand. Charlie is gone but not forgotten and will live in your heart forever. Even so, I'm so, so sorry for your loss. Heartbreaking to be sure.

    Sending you a big online hug Tracy. As a fellow cat lover and owner of various cats since I was little, I know the sadness you are going through. Cats are such wonderful pets and great company. When you are ready, I recommend getting a new friend. They don't replace the lost ones but they do help the pain go away.

My Jewellery Shed Gets A Lick Of Paint

At the end of last summer, after an incredibly busy few months jewellery-wise, I decided to take a break and repaint my shed. Etching Copper With Ferric Chloride

 I decided recently that etching is one of my favourite things to do with metal. I read about it online quite a while ago and immediately thought it looked cool but the thought of using an "acid" and having to find somewhere to store it (a perennial problem when you don't have a workroom) put me off. So instead I admired etched copper from afar. Until I got a bee in my bonnet about it again and bought Lexi Erikson's copper etching dvd. Lexi Erikson is very good at explaining jewellery techniques and making them seem much more straightforward than they first appear. I already knew that ferric chloride was a salt and not an acid so wouldn't eat my flesh through to the bone if I accidently spilled some on my hand. The dvd made me feel much more comfortable about having a go so I ordered some ferric chloride from ebay and bought some stamps and StazOn ink from a local craft shop. Amazing Enamel Effects

Buying a kiln recently has given me the chance to experiment with enamelling on larger pieces of copper and to produce some really cool effects. These effects happen when you combine different types of enamel. I usually use smaller flat pieces of copper for making enamelled earrings and have had some of these effects happen when firing with a torch but they are much more obvious when you use larger pieces. I made a few practice pieces which you can see in the photos below. This was flux {a transparent enamel not to be confused with soldering flux!} applied straight onto copper and fired until the copper was a bright golden colour. Then I added a layer of liquid enamel in green and red over the flux and fired again.  The lines and spots form when the enamel becomes hot enough to start moving and in this case the transparent pushes through the liquid enamel layer forming these cool lines and spots.
